Florida and San Diego, both ways

Miami to San Diego, and San Diego to Miami

Nous la roulons dans les deux sens et chargeons partout en Floride : Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Orlando, Tampa et les deux côtes.

San Diego is the closest California hub to Florida by road and the only one that ends at an international border. This is a dedicated lane run every week in both directions: a trailer leaves Florida for San Diego each week and one comes back. About 2,650 road miles and five days. There is a truck in the area every day.

San Diego to Miami

Shipping from San Diego to Miami?

San Diego to Florida runs every week as well, and it carries its own freight rather than whatever happens to be left in the trailer. Electronics and components, medical and biotech goods, consumer products and cross-border freight picked up on the US side all head east. Send the San Diego, Otay Mesa or Carlsbad pickup and the Florida delivery and the load is quoted on its own.

Where in San Diego

Miami to San Diego, city by city

The lane runs Miami to San Diego, Otay Mesa, Chula Vista, National City, El Cajon, Carlsbad, Oceanside, Escondido. If your city is not on that list it is still on the lane: those are where the freight clusters, not the edge of where the truck goes.

San Diego, the border and the coast road north

Three different places share one name on this lane. There is the city and its harbor, where the Port of San Diego handles vehicles, breakbulk and project cargo. There is Otay Mesa out east, the commercial crossing with Tijuana, ringed by warehouses that exist because of maquiladora freight moving north and south. And there is the coastal run up I-5 through National City, Chula Vista, Carlsbad, Oceanside and inland to El Cajon and Escondido, where the industrial parks sit.

Westbound the trailer carries retail stock, packaging, building materials, machinery and parts, and components feeding assembly work on both sides of the line. Eastbound it is finished goods, electronics, medical and consumer products aimed at the Florida market.

How the run to San Diego goes

About 2,650 road miles and five days, the shortest of the California hubs. The truck clears Florida first, north through the state before it turns west, so the first night lands in north Florida or south Georgia. Then I-10 west across the Gulf states, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, and at the far end it drops onto I-8 and crosses the desert into San Diego from the east.

Eleven hours of driving inside a 14 hour window is what the federal hours-of-service rules allow, about 550 to 600 miles a day, and that is the five days. The desert crossing on I-8 is quiet road but it is hot in summer and the descent into the city is slow, and anything delivering at Otay Mesa has border-area traffic to sit in before it gets to the dock.

The weekly lane in both directions

A trailer leaves Florida for San Diego every week and one comes back every week. That is what dedicated means here: the departure exists whether or not a particular load books it, so a shipper joins a week rather than waits for one to form. Pickup can be anywhere in Florida.

The trailer goes out full for one shipper or shared as partials between several. The eastbound half is a lane of its own with its own shippers, priced from its own pickup window. Freight continuing into Mexico is handed to a Mexican carrier at the border, and that handoff is coordinated with the road move.

What to send for a rate on this lane

Both addresses, the window at each end, weight, pallet or piece count and packaging, and the commodity. A 53 ft dry van carries about 45,000 lb across 26 pallet positions and stands 13 ft 6 in. Say if the load needs a set point or an open deck, and say if the delivery is at Otay Mesa, because the border side of town runs on its own rhythm.

If the freight comes out of an ocean container in South Florida, stripping it at the Hialeah Gardens dock before the long leg returns the box and ends per diem, and the contents usually restack to fill a trailer better than they filled the container.

Avant de quitter Hialeah Gardens

Un entrepôt à Hialeah Gardens, plus de 50 quais de chargement

A full truckload is built here first, in Hialeah Gardens. Palletize, consolidate, wrap and load out of the warehouse, so what rolls out is one clean sealed trailer instead of a half-loaded guess. If you are shipping loose freight rather than a container, this is where it becomes a load.

Questions

Réponses directes

How long does a truckload take from Miami to San Diego?

Five days over about 2,650 road miles with one driver. The federal hours-of-service rules allow 11 hours of driving in a 14 hour window, roughly 550 to 600 miles a day, and that is where the number comes from rather than from a timetable. It is the shortest of the California runs by a small margin, which is a matter of miles and not of service.

Is the San Diego truck a weekly service?

Yes, weekly and in both directions. A trailer leaves Florida for San Diego every week and a trailer comes back every week, as a dedicated lane rather than a trip put together when enough freight appears. Booking onto a week gives a firm departure date, and the eastbound side works the same way for shippers loading in San Diego, Chula Vista or Carlsbad. There is a truck in the area every day.

Can freight on this lane continue into Mexico at Otay Mesa?

Yes. The road move runs to a delivery on the US side, usually a warehouse at Otay Mesa, and from there freight crossing the border is handed to a Mexican carrier. Say at the request stage that the freight continues south and the handoff is coordinated with the road move. Tell us the US address where the trailer unloads and that part is straightforward.

Can the pickup be somewhere in Florida other than Miami?

Yes. The trailer loads anywhere in Florida before it heads west, so Orlando, Tampa, Jacksonville, Fort Myers and the rest of the state are all normal pickups on this lane. A partial can share the weekly trailer with other San Diego freight. Send the pickup address, the ready date and the pallet count and the week it belongs on is easy to settle.
