隧道是为什么修的
2014 年之前，每一辆驶离 PortMiami 的卡车都要穿过迈阿密市中心。港口在一座岛上，唯一的出口要过一座桥，然后把你放到与所有人共用的城市街道上。
PortMiami 隧道改变了这一点。它在航道下方延伸约 4,200 英尺，把港口直接接到 MacArthur Causeway 上，卡车不必经过市中心的任何一个红绿灯就能上 I-395。通行免费。
它把港口约百分之八十的货运车流从市中心街道上移走，一年大约一百五十万趟卡车行程。对大多数集装箱来说，它就是正确答案，而这恰恰是例外让人措手不及的原因：当一个办法几乎对所有情况都有效时，没人会想到去确认自己这一票是不是那个例外。
这两个数字
迈阿密-戴德县把限制写得很清楚：最大高度 15 英尺（4.57 米），最大宽度 8 英尺 6 英寸（2.59 米）。
高度这一项符合直觉。标准集装箱配标准底盘通过没有问题，而如果你拉的是高货，你自己早就知道。
让人意外的是宽度，因为 8 英尺 6 英寸并不是隧道的特殊规定，它就是美国公路上卡车的普通合法宽度。也就是说，隧道对超宽货完全没有让步：一旦你的货宽到需要办许可，它就已经太宽了，哪怕它很矮。一台又矮又宽的机械，放在平板车上看着人畜无害，恰恰就是会被劝返的那种货。
挂了危险品标牌，一律不行
除了尺寸之外，挂有危险品标牌的货物在隧道内是禁止通行的。不是不建议，也不是限时通行。是禁止。
如果不清楚这指什么：挂着危险标牌的货，也就是挂车两侧和两端那些菱形牌子，不能通过。世界各地的公路隧道都是这样，巴尔的摩和 Pennsylvania Turnpike 上的限制也是同一个道理。隧道里着火，火无处可去，里面的人也一样。
硬闯会怎样
你没有碰运气的机会。引道上装有超高检测器，配有警示标志，港口一侧在隧道入口前还有一条掉头匝道。太高的车会在到达洞口之前被检测出来并被请回去。
这个设计很好，值得知道，因为它意味着这个错误是可以挽回的：你损失的只是掉头和绕行的时间。你不会做的，是让一辆满载的车停在隧道口，后面还堵着一串车。
这也意味着港口不会有人替你说情。检测器不在乎这是谁的订舱。
真正走得通的路
隧道不接的货，就按从前所有货离港的方式走：经 Port Boulevard 桥，穿过 Biscayne Boulevard 和迈阿密市中心，再上高速。
这条路更慢，走的是城市街道，有红绿灯、行人，以及长挂车必须提前算好的转弯。这些都不稀奇。港口靠这条路走了几十年，而且每逢隧道因故封闭，它仍然是官方公布的替代路线。
但它不是可以在下午五点临时决定的路。出发时间在这条路上比在隧道里重要得多，如果这票货需要护送车，护送车必须到位。
为什么许可证救不了你
这是闸口上争论最多的一点，所以值得说准确。
佛罗里达州的超限或超重许可，是允许某一票具体的货走某些具体道路的许可。它由州里签发，是实打实的，没有它你根本动不了。但它不会改变一条隧道的物理尺寸，也不会改变隧道内关于危险品的规定。
所以司机可以完全合法、许可齐全、单证毫无问题，仍然在检测器那里被请回去。许可和隧道回答的是两个不同的问题：一个问你是否可以上路，另一个问你是否装得下。
该告诉承运方什么
三件事，订舱时说，不要等到当天：装载后的高度、装载后的宽度，以及这票货是否挂标牌。
整张清单就这三项。这三个事实决定路线，路线决定出发时间、是否需要护送车，以及这趟到底要跑多久。早点给，运输就是常规操作；晚了，你就是在花钱让一辆卡车开到一条它本来就进不去的隧道口。
如果不知道装载后的高度，就去量，不要猜。普通箱和过不去的箱之间的差别，往往在下面的底盘，而不在箱子本身。

What are the height and width limits in the PortMiami Tunnel?
Miami-Dade publishes them plainly: maximum height 15 feet, maximum width 8 feet 6 inches. The height behaves as you would expect, since a standard container on a standard chassis clears it comfortably. The width is the one that surprises people, because 8 feet 6 inches is simply the ordinary legal width of a truck on an American road. The tunnel makes no allowance for wide loads at all, so the moment a load needs a width permit it is too wide for the tunnel, however short it is.
Can a placarded hazmat load use the PortMiami Tunnel?
No. Separately from the dimensions, placarded hazardous materials are prohibited in the tunnel. Not discouraged, not limited to a time window, prohibited. A load carrying hazard placards, the diamond signs on the sides and ends of the trailer, cannot go through. This is normal for road tunnels everywhere and it is the same reason the restriction exists in Baltimore and on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. A fire in a tunnel has nowhere to go, and neither does anyone in it.
Does an oversize permit let a load use the tunnel?
No, and this causes more argument at the gate than anything else. A Florida oversize or overweight permit is permission to move a particular load on particular roads, and without it you are not moving at all. What it does not do is change the physical size of a tunnel or the rule about hazardous materials inside one. A driver can be entirely legal and fully permitted and still be turned around. The permit answers whether you may travel; the tunnel answers whether you fit.
What happens if an over-height truck reaches the tunnel?
You do not get to try your luck. There is an over-height vehicle detector on the approach with a warning sign, and a U-turn ramp ahead of the tunnel entrance on the port side, so a truck that is too tall gets picked up and sent back around before it reaches the portal. That is good design, because the failure is recoverable: you lose the time it takes to turn around and drive the other way rather than stopping a loaded rig at a tunnel mouth.
How do oversize loads get out of PortMiami instead?
The way everything used to. Out over the Port Boulevard bridge, across Biscayne Boulevard, and through downtown Miami to pick up the highway. It is slower and it runs on city streets with lights, pedestrians and turns a long trailer has to plan for, and it is still the published alternative whenever the tunnel is closed for any reason. Departure time matters far more on this route, and if the load needs escorts they have to be there.
