What it costs

Chassis charges explained: day rate, split, tri-axle

A container does not roll on its own. It rides a chassis, the wheeled frame under the box, and the chassis bills by the day from the day it goes under your container until the day it comes out. Our day rate is in the table below. The two chassis charges that surprise people are the split and the tri-axle, and both have plain explanations.

What a chassis day is

The chassis is equipment with a daily cost whether it moves or not, and the day rate passes that through. A live unload that returns the box same-day pays one chassis day. A drop where the container sits at your dock for three days pays three, because the chassis is under the box the whole time, unavailable for other work.

This is why the unload method on the warehousing side matters here too: the faster the box is emptied and returned, the fewer chassis days the move carries. The rate itself is in the table below.

The split, and who causes it

A chassis split happens when the container and the chassis are not in the same place. The box is at one terminal, the nearest available chassis is at a depot across town, and a truck has to make a separate leg to marry the two before the move proper can start.

The charge exists because that leg is real driving that the base rate never contained. It is caused by equipment positioning, which is the chassis provider's geography and the port's daily churn, not by anything you did and usually not by anything we did. When a split is likely we say so at quote time, because a foreseeable charge disclosed late is the thing this page exists to prevent.

When a tri-axle is required

Weight. Florida caps gross combination weight at 80,000 pounds and a single axle at 20,000, and a heavy box on a standard chassis can pass the first test and fail the second purely because of how the weight sits. A tri-axle chassis spreads the load across more axles and brings an overweight container back inside the axle limits.

A tri-axle costs more per day than a standard chassis because it is scarcer and heavier equipment, and an overweight move usually needs a state permit alongside it. If your container is heavy, say so at quote time with the actual weight: the tri-axle, the permit and the routing all hang off that one number, and finding out at the scale is the expensive version.

How to keep chassis charges small

Return the box fast. Chassis days are the one charge on this page you control directly, and a dock that empties a container the day it arrives pays the minimum.

Give us the weight early and honestly. A box declared at legal weight that scales heavy triggers a tri-axle, a permit and a delay all at once, and every one of those was cheaper when it was planned.

And treat the numbers here the way the whole site treats them: every rate is a from-anchor, and the figure for your move is confirmed in writing before the truck rolls.

The numbers

LineFromConditions
底盘租用$25 每天
Chassis split 底盘调运$120 每次
三轴底盘$75 每天先与您确认

Every figure above is a starting anchor, not a firm price. The real charges can differ once we see the move, and every rate is confirmed in writing before anything moves.

Why am I paying for a chassis at all?

Because the container cannot roll without one, and the chassis is equipment with a daily cost whether it moves or sits. The day rate passes that through, from the day the chassis goes under your box until the day it comes out. Emptying and returning the container quickly is how you keep it to one or two days.

What is a chassis split and did I cause it?

A split is a separate truck leg to unite a container and a chassis that are sitting in different places. It is caused by equipment positioning around the port, not by you. When a split is likely for your move we say so at quote time rather than on the invoice.

When do I need a tri-axle chassis?

When the box is heavy enough that a standard chassis would put too much weight on a single axle. Florida limits an axle to 20,000 pounds, and a tri-axle spreads the load to stay legal. Overweight moves usually need a state permit too, so the container's real weight is the first thing to tell us.

Is the chassis day rate negotiable for long holds?

The published rate is a from-anchor, and every rate on this site is confirmed in writing for the actual move. If you know the container will sit for a while, say so at quote time and the written quote will price the whole hold, not surprise you day by day.
