What moves between Florida and Illinois
Chicago takes most of this lane, and the intermodal and warehouse belt around it takes most of Chicago: Joliet, Bolingbrook, Elk Grove Village, Aurora and Naperville. Beyond the metro the lane reaches Rockford, Peoria, Springfield and Champaign. Because Chicago is the hinge of the country's freight network, a load that says Chicago is often really headed further into the Midwest, so the final stop is worth naming up front.
Northbound it is usually retail and e-commerce stock, packaging, building materials, machinery and parts, along with freight that came in through a South Florida port and is moving inland. Southbound it is manufactured goods, industrial and machine freight, food and beverage, and retail replenishment aimed at the Florida market. Both directions carry their own shippers and get their own rate.
How the run to Illinois actually goes
About 1,380 road miles and roughly three days. The first leg is the Florida corridor: almost everything leaving the state runs north through a narrow neck before the map opens up, so the first night usually falls in north Florida or south Georgia rather than at a state line that feels further along. Driver hours set the rest of it, and Midwest winter weather can add a day to an otherwise straightforward run.
The far end is the part that decides the schedule. The big buildings around Joliet and Elk Grove Village run on appointments that do not move, so the last day is planned backwards from the window rather than forwards from the miles. A drop trailer suits a dock that loads on its own time; a live load keeps the truck standing while it is worked. Illinois to Miami runs the same corridor in reverse and is priced as its own load.
What to send for a rate on this lane
Pickup and delivery addresses, the window at each end, the weight, how many pallets or pieces and how they are packaged, and what the commodity is. A 53 ft dry van carries about 45,000 lb and a reefer in the same footprint about 44,000, so heavy freight has its trailer settled by the weight rather than by preference. Say if the load needs temperature control, or an open deck because it loads from the side or the top.

Does a Chicago load usually carry on into the Midwest?
Very often, and that is worth saying at the request stage rather than after the truck is loaded. Chicago is the hinge of the country's freight network, so a load billed to Chicago is frequently really headed for Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan or Iowa. If the final stop is past Illinois, tell us the actual address and it is quoted as the lane it really is, which is usually cheaper than paying for it twice.
Can you deliver to the Joliet and Bolingbrook intermodal belt?
Yes, and that belt is where a lot of this lane lands. Joliet, Bolingbrook, Elk Grove Village, Aurora and Naperville are large, well-run buildings with appointment systems that do not move, so the delivery window shapes the run more than the road does. Give the dock address and the window when you ask for the rate and the last day of the trip gets planned backwards from it.
Is Chicago a three-day run in both directions?
Typically, yes, about 1,380 road miles each way and around three days of driving. What differs is not the distance but the ends: a Chicago pickup with a fixed loading window and a Florida delivery that takes freight when it arrives behave nothing like the reverse. Three days is typical drive time for the distance rather than a scheduled service, and weather through the Midwest in winter can add to it.
