45ft containers: why some carriers quietly decline them, and the seven inches that matter

A 45ft container is not just a longer 40. There is no standard-height 45: they are all high cubes, which is what the 5 in the ISO code L5G1 means. They need a 45ft or extendible chassis, which is precisely why some carriers decline them without saying so. And on the South Florida trades a lot of them are 102 inch wide bodies, which is seven inches wider inside than an ISO box, and those seven inches decide whether two 48 inch pallets fit side by side.

There is no standard-height 45

Twenty and forty foot containers come in two heights: standard at 8 feet 6, and high cube at 9 feet 6. The 45 standardised only as a high cube, so the choice does not exist.

You can read it off the ISO type code. In L5G1 the 5 is the height class, and it means 9 feet 6. If somebody quotes you a 45, it is a high cube whether or not anyone says the words.

The practical consequence is overall height on the road. A high cube on a chassis is taller than a standard, and height is one of the two numbers that decides whether a load can use the PortMiami Tunnel.

The chassis is why some carriers say no

A 45 needs a 45ft chassis or an extendible one. A standard 40ft chassis will not legally or safely carry it.

Those chassis are less common in the pools than 20 and 40 foot equipment, so a carrier without reliable access to one has a choice: find one, or find a reason your load is not a good fit this week. The second is easier and it is what quietly happens.

This is worth asking about directly rather than discovering on the day. A carrier that runs 45s regularly will answer immediately; one that does not will get vague, and vague is your answer.

The 102 inch wide body, and the pallet arithmetic

An ISO container is 8 feet wide, giving roughly 92 inches inside. A 102 inch wide body gives about 99 inches inside. Seven inches.

Those seven inches are the entire point. Two standard 48 inch pallets side by side need 96 inches of clear width. At 99 inches they fit. At 92 they do not, and you are loading in a single row or turning pallets, which changes how much you can actually ship in one box.

Seaboard and Crowley both run wide bodies out of South Florida, so on the Latin America and Caribbean trades this is not an exotic piece of equipment, it is a normal one. If your cargo palletises, ask which you are getting before you plan the load.

What to say when you book

Say 45, and say whether it is a wide body, because those are two different equipment problems and the second one is invisible unless somebody mentions it.

Say the loaded height if anything unusual is inside, because a high cube already spends part of the legal height allowance before your cargo does.

And say it at quote time rather than pickup. A 45 arranged in advance is an ordinary move. A 45 discovered at the gate is a truck that drove to a terminal it cannot leave with.

Is a 45ft container always a high cube?

Yes. Twenty and forty foot containers come in two heights, standard at 8 feet 6 and high cube at 9 feet 6, but the 45 standardised only as a high cube, so the choice does not exist. You can read it off the ISO type code: in L5G1 the 5 is the height class and it means 9 feet 6. If somebody quotes you a 45, it is a high cube whether or not anyone says the words.

What chassis does a 45ft container need?

A 45ft chassis or an extendible one. A standard 40ft chassis will not legally or safely carry it. Those chassis are less common in the pools than 20 and 40 foot equipment, so availability is a genuine planning question rather than a formality. Ask directly whether the carrier runs 45s regularly. One that does will answer immediately, and one that does not will get vague, which is itself your answer.

Why do some carriers quietly decline 45ft containers?

Because of the chassis. Without reliable access to a 45ft or extendible chassis, a carrier has two options: find one, or find a reason your load is not a good fit this week. The second is easier, so it is what tends to happen, and it rarely arrives as a refusal. It arrives as delay. Arranging a 45 in advance makes it an ordinary move; discovering it at the gate makes it a truck that cannot leave with the box.

What is a 102 inch wide body container?

It is a container built wider than the ISO standard. An ISO box is 8 feet wide, giving roughly 92 inches inside; a 102 inch wide body gives about 99 inches inside. Seaboard and Crowley both run wide bodies out of South Florida, so on the Latin America and Caribbean trades this is normal equipment rather than an exotic request. It is invisible on a booking unless somebody names it, so name it.

Do two 48 inch pallets fit side by side in a 45?

Only in a wide body. Two standard 48 inch pallets side by side need 96 inches of clear width. A 102 inch wide body gives about 99 inches inside, so they fit. An ISO width box gives about 92 inches, so they do not, and you end up loading in a single row or turning pallets, which changes how much you can actually ship in one container. If your cargo palletises, ask which you are getting before you plan the load.
