What moves between Florida and Georgia
Atlanta is the distribution hub of the Southeast and it takes most of this lane, along with the warehouse belt south of it at McDonough and Locust Grove and west at Austell. Savannah on the coast adds port freight, and the lane runs on to Augusta, Macon, Columbus and Athens. It is the shortest of the long-haul lanes and the one that turns fastest.
Northbound it is usually retail stock, food and beverage, packaging, building materials and machinery, plus freight that landed at a South Florida port and is heading up I-75. Southbound it is retail replenishment out of the Atlanta distribution centers, manufactured goods, and port freight off Savannah aimed at the Florida market. Both directions run constantly and both are priced as their own loads.
How the run to Georgia actually goes
About 660 road miles, a day or two up I-75. It is short enough that the Florida corridor is most of the trip rather than a preamble to it: the drive from Miami to the state line is the bulk of the miles, and the traffic around Orlando is the part that decides whether it is one day or two. Driver hours make the difference, because 660 miles sits close to the edge of a legal day.
That makes the ends of the run matter more than usual. An early load and an open delivery window can finish in a day; an afternoon pickup or a fixed morning appointment in Atlanta turns it into a second-day delivery. A drop trailer suits a dock that loads slowly and lets the truck turn faster, and on a lane this short a fast turn is most of the value. Georgia to Miami runs the same way and is quoted on its own.
What to send for a rate on this lane
Pickup and delivery addresses, the window at each end, the weight, the pallet or piece count and how it is packaged, and what the commodity is. A 53 ft dry van carries about 45,000 lb and a reefer in the same footprint about 44,000, so heavy freight has its trailer settled by the weight rather than by preference. Say if it needs temperature control, or an open deck because it loads from the side or the top.
If the freight arrives by sea, say so. On a lane this short the transload question is genuinely open: the container can sometimes run through on a chassis, and sometimes coming out of the box at the Hialeah Gardens dock is cheaper because the box goes back and stops paying per diem. Is Miami to Atlanta a one-day run?
About 660 road miles, so it sits right on the edge of what a driver can legally do in a day. It happens, and it depends entirely on when the truck can load and when the receiver will take it. If the pickup is early and the delivery window is open, one day is realistic. If loading runs into the afternoon, it becomes a second-day delivery, and it is better to plan for that than to promise around it.
Do you carry port freight out of Savannah?
Yes, Savannah is on this lane and a lot of what moves on it is port freight heading south into Florida. Whether it should travel in the ocean container or come out of it first depends on how far it is going and how long the box would be away, since a container out of state is paying chassis and per diem the whole time. Send the container number and the destination and both ways get looked at.
Is Georgia too short a lane to be worth a full truckload?
Sometimes, and that gets said straight rather than quietly billed. A single pallet going to Atlanta is not obviously worth its own truck, and a partial is worth asking about: whether it is worth its own truck or worth waiting to share one is a real question with a real answer. A full trailer, freight that cannot be handled twice, or anything on a deadline is worth the truckload every time on this lane.
