Handling and repack

The work that happens to freight while it is on the floor: palletized, wrapped, labelled, counted, sorted, repacked, photographed, and where the destination needs it, repackaged into what it actually sells as. Priced by what the freight needs rather than from a menu, because no two of these jobs are the same shape.

Handling and repack

Palletize, restack and rework

Cargo that arrived loose leaves on pallets. Cargo that arrived on pallets the receiver will not accept gets restacked onto pallets they will: the right height, the right footprint, the right overhang, or ISPM 15 stamped wood if it is going back out by sea. Restacking and pallet rework are the same job under two names, and it is the most common thing asked for on this floor.

This is the most common request we get and it is almost always a receiver problem rather than a shipping one. A retailer's routing guide, a distribution center that will not take a double-stacked pallet, an export that needs treated wood. Tell us the destination's rule and the freight leaves matching it.

Shrink wrap, banding and labels

Wrapping holds a pallet together for the road and is the cheapest insurance on the whole move. Banding does the same for anything wrapping will not hold.

Labels are the other half. Carton labels, pallet labels, a receiver's own barcode format, or simply making sure the marks that are already on the freight are visible on the outside of the pallet rather than buried in the middle of it.

Count, sort and photograph

Every piece that comes off a container gets counted. If the count does not match the paperwork, that is documented before the freight moves anywhere, with photographs, while the container is still here.

Sorting is separating what arrived together into what leaves separately: by SKU, by destination, by purchase order, by whatever line the freight has to split along. It is ordinary work and it is worth asking for early, because sorting on the way out of the container costs far less than sorting a stack of pallets afterwards.

Photographs are free and we take them whether or not anything is wrong. They are the difference between a claim and an argument.

Repack, custom packaging and co-packing

Damaged outer cartons get repacked so the freight can travel. Cases that split get consolidated. A pallet that arrived as a hazard gets rebuilt as one that is not.

Beyond that there is custom packaging, which is a different job from making freight safe to move. Cases get opened and the contents rebuilt into what the destination actually wants: retail-ready packs, multipacks and bundles, poly bagging, kitting several items into one sellable unit, and relabelling for the market the goods are entering rather than the one they left. If your receiver has a packaging spec, send it and the freight leaves matching it.

Regulated categories are handled too. The building is an FDA-registered food facility, and for drug and cosmetic goods the work follows what the product requires, so tell us what it is before the container sails rather than after it lands. Describe the job and you get a straight answer and a quote for getting it done.

What does it cost to unload a container?

It depends on one thing more than any other: whether the freight is on pallets or stacked loose on the floor. Palletized is a forklift job. Floor-loaded is a crew by hand, and a floor-loaded 40ft is roughly double a 20ft because it is roughly double the box. The published rates are on the warehousing cost page, and they are separated exactly that way rather than hidden behind one devanning number.

Do you unload floor-loaded containers?

Yes, and it is worth telling us before you book rather than after. Nobody can tell from a packing list whether a container is floor-loaded; if it lists cartons with no pallet count, assume it is, because discovering it at the dock costs an afternoon and a crew.

Can you restack or rework a damaged pallet load?

Yes. Pallet restacking and rework is ordinary work here: a load that shifted, a pallet built too high for the receiver, cartons that need re-squaring and re-wrapping before anyone will take them. It is also the moment to photograph what arrived, while the container it came out of is still in front of us.

Does unloading here get the container back to the line faster?

That is usually the whole reason to do it here. Per diem runs the entire time the box is out of the terminal, including the days it waits at your dock for a crew. Minutes from the port, the container is emptied and returned the same day and the freight waits on your schedule instead of the line's.
